Salado Public Library District Policies

 I.       CIRCULATION POLICY

1.      Each patron is allowed to have ten items checked out at one time, two of which may be DVDs and two VHS movies.  However, a first-time patron may only check out two items, one of which may be a movie.

2.      New books, those marked with a new book sticker, have a circulation period of two weeks (fourteen days).  Books will be designated as “new” for four months.  All other books, audio books, and magazines have a circulation period of three weeks (twenty-one days).  Videos have a circulation period of one week (seven days).  The most recent issue of each magazine may not circulate.

3.      New books may not be renewed.  All other materials may be renewed one time unless another patron has placed a hold on the item.

4.      Library cards may be issued to patrons three years or older.

5.      Overdue fines are $.05 cents per day for books and audio books and $.25 cents per day for movies.  There is a one day grace period on overdue materials.

6.      Patrons will not be allowed to check out materials or use Interlibrary Loan Services if they:

     a.       owe $5.00 or more in unpaid fines, or
     b.      have any unpaid fines three months old or older, or
     c.       have any overdue materials

7.      Lost or heavily damaged items must be paid for within three months of due date.

II.                PATRON BEHAVIOR

A.  General

1.      Disruptive or offensive behavior will not be tolerated; patrons exhibiting such will be asked to leave and may be denied library privileges for up to six months.

2.      Patrons shall not deface, damage, or destroy library materials or property.

3.      Sleeping in the library is not permitted.

4.      Use of cell phones inside the library is prohibited.

5.      Persons are not allowed to consume food or beverages in the library other than foods and beverages provided by the library.

6.      Smoking is not permitted on library premises.

B.     Children

1      Children seven years old or under must be supervised by a parent or responsible attendant.

2.    Children may not be left unattended in any part of the library.

3.    Disruptive behavior of children will not be tolerated.  Older children may be asked to leave.

4.    The library is not responsible for the safety of unattended children of any age.

C.   Computer Use

1.      Inappropriate use of library computers is not allowed, including:

      a.     sending, displaying or printing obscene materials,
      b.     using computers for any illegal activity.

2.      Persons abusing computer privileges may be banned from using the library and/or library computers.

III.             COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT

1.      The library will acquire materials first and foremost which fulfill the three roles of the library as specified in the long-range plan as:

      a.       a popular leisure-reading library
      b.      a pre-schooler’s door to learning
      c.       an independent learning center

The general criteria for the selection of library materials purchased by the SPLD are:

     a.       favorable reviews in reputable review sources
     b.      the author’s reputation and significance as a writer
     c.       importance of the subject matter to the library’s collection
     d.      scarcity of materials on the subject
     e.       availability of materials elsewhere in the area 
     f.        availability of materials through the Internet
     g.       price

2.      Material will be selected with concern for all ages, races, backgrounds, interest, abilities and educational levels.

 
IV.            GIFTS AND DONATIONS

1.      Books and other library materials will be accepted on the condition that the library director has the authority to make the disposition that he/she deems advisable.  Books offered as gifts must meet the library’s standards for book selection.

2.      Other personal property will be accepted at the discretion of the Board of Trustees.

3.      The library will accept only materials that are outright gifts.  The donor must determine their value for tax purposes.

V.            LIBRARY PUBLIC DISPLAY AREAS

The library public display areas may be used for library-related, non-profit, or local community organization materials only.

VI.            PET POLICY

No animal shall be allowed in the library unless it is part of a library program or it is a service animal.
